Ubuntu 12.10 Named Quantal Quetzal - Release Schedule

So, the journey continues, Ubuntu 12.04 is to be released in 2 days from now, on the 26th of April, and we've already got our hands on the next Ubuntu version, 12.10. We've got the release schedule, we've got the codename, and the development is just about to begin.

Yesterday, Mark Shuttleworth has announced on his blog the codename for Ubuntu 12.10: 'Quantal Quetzal'. Quetzals are strikingly coloured birds (Wikipedia), and probably this name has got something to do with reshaping the look of Ubuntu with version 12.10. Although it isn't that easy to remember, pronounce and spell at the moment, we'll eventually get used to it rather soon. You can take a look at all the codename suggestions for Ubuntu 12.10 here.

Mark further stated in his blog post:

On the fauna front, the quotable campaign for the Queer Quokka is quorate but, it must sometimes be said, this is not a democracy. One man’s favourite furball is another’s mangy marsupial. No, the quintessential stories of Q will be all about style on the client, with a refresh of our theme and typography, a start on new iconography and perhaps even a new form factor taking flight. So brown is out and something colourful and light is called for. On the cloud front, the new virtualized network madness called Quantum will make its appearance. Being a first cut, it’s more likely to be Folsom than wholesome, but it’s going to be worth calling out, and the name is reminiscent of our package-oriented practices, where goodness is delivered one piece at a time. And so the stage is set for a decision: I give you the Quantal Quetzal, soon to be dressed in tessellated technicolour, now open for toolchains, kernels and other pressing preparatory packages.

So, we can probably hope for a new icon theme and a refreshed look throughout Ubuntu. Let's wait and see!

The release schedule for Ubuntu 12.10 was also announced a couple of days ago, although it is still subject of change:
  • Alpha 1 – June 7th, 2012
  • Alpha 2 - June 28th, 2012
  • Alpha 3 - August 2nd, 2012
  • Beta 1 - September 6th, 2012
  • Beta 2 - September 27th, 2012
  • Final Release - October 18th, 2012
As was the case with a couple of previous release cycles, Ubuntu 12.10 is to feature 3 Alpha and 2 Beta releases before the final release comes out on the 18th of October this year, as scheduled now.
