Spice Up your Desktop with Elegant GNOME GTK Theme and AwOken Icon Set

Elegant GNOME is another nice GTK theme. You can install it in Ubuntu Lucid and Maverick via a PPA which automates the process and makes it a lot easier. And as a bonus, you'll get a modified version of AwOken icon theme, which looks really stunning, too.

Lucid and Maverick

Go to Terminal under Applications > Accessories menu and run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elegant-gnome/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install elegant-gnome

Once installed, go to Applications > Accessories > Elegant GNOME and choose 'Install the pack' and click 'Ok'. It would apply the new theme immediately and would also give you certain choices like rounded or squared corners, window control buttons on the right or left of the title bar etc. At the end, it might require you to re-login to apply the changes to any remaining items which couldn't be applied in the same session.

Ubuntu Natty

Elegant GNOME theme packages for Natty are not yet available in the PPA, so if you are a Natty user, you'll need to install the theme pack from the sources.

Download the theme pack here, "Source":

Extract the newly downloaded source package (right-click on the downloaded package and click 'Extract Here'). Now open a Terminal and run:

cd ~/Downloads/<name-of-extracted-directory>
make ubuntu
sudo make install

Assuming that the extracted package is in the 'Downloads' folder, and replace <name-of-extracted-directory> with the original name of directory in question.

Once finished, go to Applications > Accessories > Elegant GNOME in classic session or if using Unity, search the Dash for 'Elegant GNOME' and open it. Choose the 'Install the pack' option and click 'Ok'. You might need to re-login for all the changes to take effect.

Later, if you want to remove the pack, go to the same extracted sources directory and run:

sudo make uninstall

Google Chrome/Chromium

Google Chrome/Chromium doesn't seem to properly follow the system GTK themes at all. For integrating it better into the Elegant GNOME theme, download the "Google Chrome" Elegant theme pack here:

Extract it and then drag and drop all the .crx files from the newly extracted folder to your Chrome/Chromium browser, one by one. You might need to restart the browser between each of those file installations.
